Information on Research Visits
Researchers and members of the public may visit the stores collections for research during weekday opening hours by prior arrangement.
The majority of our extensive collections are catalogued, with information available through MODES AND Cardbox databases.
Research can be conducted on a personal level and access to collections is by appointment with member of Curatorial staff. We are happy to support a broad range of personal research projects, from scientists, artists and general interest researchers.
A majority of our MODES catalogues are now available online through our website, including Archaeology, Palaeontology, Social History, Geology, Mineralogy and Ethnography. Others, including Ceramics, Coins and Medals, Herbarium, Zoology and Ornithology, are available through our in-museum MODES portal by prior arrangement. All our Pictorial Records and Archives are catalogued on Cardbox, which is accessible for researchers in the museum by prior arrangement.
Academic researchers can visit and use the collections by appointment. Over a period of time and we encourage publication and dissemination of knowledge gained from the collections, from lectures to film, exhibitions and the like.
