Channel 5 Model Railway Inspired by Agatha Christie – Meet the Builders
Date: 17 September 2021
An International Agatha Christie Festival Event
1.15pm – 2.15pm
Meet the builders of a superb Agatha Christie-inspired model railway, constructed for Channel 5’s Great Model Railway Challenge, screened in 2019. They will present their clever, animated 15ft by 7ft masterpiece, sharing details of the challenges they faced building it, the Christie novels that inspired them, as well as showing excerpts from the episode where it was presented to the public to such acclaim.
Model railway experts Ray Pattinson and Richard Ransford, from Wiltshire, led a team whose challenge was to construct a detailed model railway in only three days, inspired by the classic novels of Agatha Christie. Ray and Richard have since improved and fine-tuned their model railway, so it’s now even more impressive.
The layout incorporates actual Christie books as part of the landscape, which features places and scenes from some of the Queen of Crime’s classic novels. There’s a reconstructed Churston railway station from the ABC Murders, a golf course (complete with dead body hidden in a bunker) from Murder on the Links, a reconstruction of a body thrown from a train from the 4.50 From Paddington, the DC3 plane flying from Paris to Croydon featured in Death in the Clouds, and a grand finale reconstruction of the avalanche scene from Murder on the Orient Express.
For fans of Agatha Christie and railways, this is a must-see event. Numbers are strictly limited, so book your tickets early by visiting the International Agatha Christie Festival website via this link, or by contacting Torquay Museum directly on 01803 293975.
