Jane Austen Letter Goes on Display at Torquay Museum
Date: 18 July 2017 - 24 July 2017
To mark the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen's death, the Museum will be exhibiting the finest surviving letter written by the author to her sister Cassandra for one week only.
The letter will be on display in the Museum's Old Devon Farmhouse Gallery from 18th July until Monday 24th July to mark this anniversary. The original letter is rarely displayed and contains the first known reference to the novel Pride & Prejudice.
The letter was acquired by Hester Pengelly, daughter of one of the founders of Torquay Museum, William Pengelly. Hester was an avid collector of autographs and letters from a huge range of famous people – from writers and artists to scientists, explorers and royalty.
